Background of the study :
Vocational training is increasingly recognized as a pivotal tool in fostering entrepreneurial skills among undergraduates, especially in regions where traditional academic pathways do not fully prepare students for the dynamic business environment. In Zaria Local Government Area, Kaduna State, the integration of vocational training within higher education institutions has been posited as a strategy to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and practical entrepreneurial skills. Recent empirical studies (Babatunde, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024) have highlighted that undergraduates exposed to vocational training exhibit higher levels of creativity, risk-taking ability, and business acumen. This is particularly relevant in the context of Nigeria’s evolving economic landscape where entrepreneurship is increasingly viewed as a viable alternative to formal employment. Vocational training programs in Zaria aim to provide hands-on experience through practical modules that simulate real business challenges, enabling students to develop competencies that are essential for launching and managing startups. The training typically covers areas such as financial management, marketing, production, and innovation management. This comprehensive approach not only enhances students’ technical skills but also builds critical soft skills such as leadership, communication, and problem-solving, which are indispensable in the entrepreneurial journey (Lawal, 2023). Moreover, these programs are often supported by local government initiatives and private sector partnerships that provide mentorship and access to financial resources. Such collaborations have been shown to significantly increase the likelihood of successful business ventures among graduates (Olawale, 2025). Despite these promising developments, challenges remain in ensuring that the training is fully aligned with the rapidly evolving demands of the market. There is a pressing need for continuous curriculum updates and stronger linkages with industry experts to maintain the relevance and impact of vocational training. As a result, this study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of vocational training in enhancing entrepreneurial skills development among undergraduates in Zaria. By investigating both the benefits and the challenges associated with these training programs, the research aims to offer actionable recommendations for policymakers and educators to improve the integration of vocational training into university curricula and to foster a more entrepreneurial culture among students.
Statement of the problem :
Despite the recognized potential of vocational training in enhancing entrepreneurial skills, undergraduates in Zaria Local Government Area still face significant barriers in translating these skills into successful business ventures. A critical problem is the mismatch between the theoretical frameworks taught in traditional academic settings and the practical, hands-on experience provided by vocational training programs. This misalignment often results in graduates who are theoretically proficient yet practically unprepared for the challenges of entrepreneurship (Adebayo, 2023). Furthermore, the rapid pace of technological advancements and evolving market dynamics demands that vocational training curricula be continuously updated—a challenge that many institutions in Zaria have yet to meet. Additionally, there is inadequate exposure to real-life entrepreneurial challenges and insufficient opportunities for mentorship and networking with successful entrepreneurs. Many undergraduates report that while vocational training offers valuable technical insights, it often lacks a comprehensive focus on critical entrepreneurial elements such as innovation, market analysis, and financial planning (Umeh, 2024). These shortcomings contribute to a persistent gap between the skills acquired during training and the competencies required to navigate the complexities of launching and sustaining a business. The lack of standardization across various vocational programs further exacerbates the problem, as inconsistent training quality leads to varying outcomes among graduates. The present study aims to address these issues by critically examining the current state of vocational training for undergraduates in Zaria, identifying the key factors that impede effective entrepreneurial skills development, and proposing strategies to enhance the practical applicability of these programs. The findings from this research will be instrumental in guiding curriculum reform and policy adjustments to better prepare undergraduates for the entrepreneurial challenges of a competitive global market (Chinwe, 2025).
